# Jamaica Family Vacation – Dec 2026: Research & Recommendation

## Executive summary

**Book the Iberostar Selection Rose Hall Suites, Saturday Dec 12 to Friday Dec 18 (6 nights / 7 days): CA$7,877 for all three of you, nonstop flights and taxes included** (live Air Transat package quote, Oct 9, 2026). Staying one more night (back Sat Dec 19, 7 nights / 8 days) is CA$8,677.

- **Why it wins:** it combines a 20–35 minute airport transfer, strong guest scores (TripAdvisor 4.4 from 7,483 reviews; Expedia 8.4/10 from 1,004), a real water park and lazy river, a kids club that takes 7–12-year-olds, and junior suites that sleep four.
- **Best value:** Grand Palladium Jamaica (Lucea), CA$5,477 for 6 nights or CA$5,937 for 7 nights, about CA$2,400–2,700 less than Iberostar. Trade-off: lower reviews (TripAdvisor 4.0), a 40–55 minute transfer and big-resort walking.
- **Easiest access to waterfalls, cliff jumping and Bob Marley:** Moon Palace Jamaica in Ocho Rios, flying Air Canada on Sun Dec 13. About CA$6,700 hotel-plus-flights for 5 nights (Dec 13–18) before transfers; no package price could be retrieved.
- **Best family experience:** Beaches Negril, CA$10,677 (6 nights) or CA$12,177 (7 nights), with transfers included per the resort. It is also the closest option to Rick's Café.
- **Realistic all-in budgets** (flights, hotel, transfers, selected excursions, tips): Palladium CA$7,000–7,500, Iberostar CA$9,550–10,350, Moon Palace CA$9,050 (5 nights) to CA$11,600 (7 nights), Beaches CA$12,300–13,800. Section 8 shows how each was built.

**Three things to know before you commit.** First, Hurricane Melissa (Oct 2025) changed the market: Hyatt Ziva and Hilton Rose Hall are closed until 2027, Beaches Ocho Rios is closed, and Iberostar Waves/Riu Palace Jamaica/Riu Montego Bay are adults-only, so many "famous" family names are not options. Second, Rick's Café publishes no age rule for jumping and the only written minimum I found (12, on one tour operator) would exclude your 11-year-old; call the café before relying on it. Blue Hole in Ocho Rios is the better-documented, kid-oriented cliff-jump. Third, nonstop flights only run on certain days, and nightly prices climb steeply for stays that include Dec 18 onward.

Every CAD price below was read live in the browser on **Oct 9, 2026** for 2 adults + 1 child aged 11, unless labelled otherwise. Prices move daily and can change at checkout.

**What I could not verify.** Sunwing/WestJet Vacations and Air Canada Vacations search tools would not return December quotes from Montreal in the browser, so those two operators are not priced for these dates (Sunwing's Montreal deal page only showed Nov 30–Dec 2 departures). Royalton Blue Waters and Moon Palace have no package quote, only hotel-only prices. Booking.com blocked automated reading, so review scores come from TripAdvisor, Expedia and operator sites. TripAdvisor figures were collected by research assistants reading TripAdvisor pages through a text summariser, so treat them as approximate. Kids-club hours were not published on any page I could open.

**Taxes, baggage and transfers on Transat packages.** Prices shown include taxes and fees. [Transat's Jamaica page](https://www.transat.com/en-CA/cheap-vacation-packages/south/jamaica/montreal-montego-bay) states packages include one checked bag and one carry-on. Airport transfers are typical for Transat packages but I could not find Transat's own statement for these hotels, so confirm "transfers included" on the booking summary before paying.

## Nonstop flights: which dates actually work

Nonstop Montreal (YUL) to Montego Bay (MBJ) flights run only on certain days in your window, so departure choice is narrower than it looks. Air Transat flies the Saturday and Wednesday-to-Saturday patterns; Air Canada Rouge flies Sundays. I could not confirm any WestJet nonstop for these dates (a schedule site lists WS 2914 at 9:00 AM, but Google Flights and Kayak showed none).

A Dec 16 departure with 6–7 nights returns Dec 22–23, so it leaves your window; only the 3-night version fits.

**What this means for planning.**

- **Arrival time matters more than price.** Transat's Saturday flight lands at 6:05 PM, after sunset (about 5:30 PM). That is fine for a 20-minute drive to Rose Hall but poor for Negril, Ocho Rios or Lucea, where the drive is 45 minutes to 2 hours in the dark. Air Canada's Sunday flight lands at 1:25 PM.
- **Baggage is unverified on stand-alone fares.** Kayak labels the Air Canada fare "Standard" and I could not confirm the checked-bag allowance; Transat packages include one checked bag and one carry-on per the [Transat Jamaica page](https://www.transat.com/en-CA/cheap-vacation-packages/south/jamaica/montreal-montego-bay). Budget for bag fees if you book flights separately.
- **Google Flights prices 3 adults.** Kayak's 2 adults + 1 child totals are slightly lower and are the better guide for you.

Ranked on overall value for a family of three, not lowest price: Iberostar leads, Grand Palladium is the budget pick, and Moon Palace is the activities pick. All totals are for 2 adults + 1 child (11), CAD, taxes and fees included, checked Oct 9, 2026.

The package is much cheaper than building the same trip yourself. For Iberostar, Expedia's refundable hotel-only rate for Dec 12–19 is CA$6,955 (Junior Suite Pool View, free cancellation until Dec 9) and the flights alone are CA$3,442, about CA$10,400 in total versus CA$8,677 as a package. Palladium is similar: CA$3,720 hotel-only plus flights is about CA$7,160 versus CA$5,937.

**Caution on the packages.** Transat's "from" price is for the cheapest room category, and two of the Iberostar quotes carry an "only 2 rooms at this price" warning. I did not walk through the room-selection and options steps, so confirm that the room in the final price sleeps three (see the room column below).

**Official taxis.** Licensed JUTA and JCAL taxis wait at Sangster airport. Their fare chart is posted at the "Authorised Airport Taxi" desk past Customs and is not published online, so I could not verify it. An unsourced benchmark guide puts Rose Hall at roughly US$35–60. A pre-booked private driver quoting a fixed price is the safer comparison.

**Booking terms seen.** MBJ Airport Shuttle: pre-book by form or WhatsApp, pay on arrival by cash or card or prepay, meet at Desk 4 after Customs, no fee for flight delays, child seats free on request. MAPL Tours: full prepayment, flexible cancellation up to 48 hours (20% admin fee), no-shows charged in full, no delay surcharge. Viator shared shuttles: free cancellation to 24 hours, flight and hotel details required, reviews mention long waits and multiple stops.

**Travelling with an 11-year-old.** Jamaican rules for private vehicles say children up to 12 must use a booster or a properly fitted seat belt, and no penalty applies if the belt fits (Jamaica Observer, Feb 2023; the height rule cited is 4 ft 9 in). Ride in the back with a lap-and-shoulder belt, and ask the operator to bring a booster if your child is smaller than that.

**Safety.** The Government of Canada rates Jamaica "Exercise a high degree of caution" because of violent crime and advises hotel-ordered or JUTA-authorized taxis with red-and-white "PP" plates and avoiding unmarked taxis and local buses ([travel.gc.ca](https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/jamaica)). The US State Department's Level 2 advisory (updated Jul 2, 2026) adds that night driving is dangerous and carjackings of rental cars have been reported. Avoid self-driving; plan arrivals before dark where you can.

### Getting to excursions

- **Best option: tours and drivers with hotel pickup.** Operators such as Isle Blue, Chukka and Island Routes quote per-person or per-party prices that include transport (see section 7).
- **Taxi add-ons from Ocho Rios** (JUTA Tours): Dunn's River taxi US$105 = CA$149 for 1–4 people; Blue Hole return taxi US$120 = CA$170.
- **Driver by the day:** the only published rate I found was a chauffeur package at about US$150 (CA$213) per day for 10 hours with a 4-day minimum, which does not suit a one-week trip. Hourly Montego Bay transport starts from US$50 (CA$71) for 8 hours, with out-of-town pickups extra (Isle Hospitality; "from" price). Ask your hotel desk for a day rate.
- **Toll road:** the North–South Highway between Kingston and Ocho Rios costs J$2,495 each way for a car (a rise to J$2,610 was proposed from Jul 16, 2026; not confirmed). It matters only for Kingston day trips.

## Activities: cliff jumping, waterfalls, culture, hiking and food

Ocho Rios has the densest set of family activities and the only well-documented kid-oriented cliff jump (Blue Hole). Negril has Rick's Café and Mayfield Falls. Montego Bay is best for rafting and short tours that can include a Rick's Café stop. Costs are for 2 adults + 1 child (11), converted from US dollars at 1.42 unless a CAD price is shown; most operator prices are secondary-source or "from" prices, so confirm before booking. Hurricane Melissa status is noted where I found it, and everything should be re-checked in late November.

### Cliff jumping: visiting is not the same as jumping

**Bottom line on cliff jumping.** Visiting Rick's Café is an easy, free sunset stop from any Negril or Lucea base. Jumping there at 11 is unconfirmed and should be settled by phone first. If your child wants a certain, supervised jump, Blue Hole is the safer plan and favours a Moon Palace stay.

**Hiking.** There is no serious mountain hike within an easy drive of the resort hubs. The family-friendly options are the guided river walk at Mayfield Falls (1–2 h), the guided scramble at Blue Hole, the Dunn's River climb and Konoko's 10-minute staircase. If you do a Kingston day, a Blue Mountains hike with a coffee-farm visit (about 7 h, adults US$80 and children 5–12 US$75 from Kingston, from Elsolvida via Rezdy; about CA$334 for three) is the nearest thing to a mountain hike, but it is a long day. Holywell National Park charged US$10 adults and US$5 children in a page dated Jan 2018.

**Food experiences.** The best verified one is Scotchies. Rick's Café is a sunset dinner stop. Pelican Bar (a bar on stilts in the sea, rebuilt after the hurricane) is 2½–3 h from every hub, so skip it. I did not find verified cooking classes or food tours.

## Realistic total budget per finalist

Expect roughly CA$7,000–7,500 at Grand Palladium, CA$9,550–10,350 at Iberostar, CA$9,050–11,600 at Moon Palace and CA$12,300–13,800 at Beaches Negril, once transfers, four or five excursions and spending money are added. Bases are the confirmed quotes from the comparison table; excursion lines use the CAD conversions in section 7 and are estimates unless the activity price was published.

**What the totals leave out.** Travel insurance, meals outside the resort (beyond the excursions listed), premium drinks, spa and kids-club extras, and optional checked-bag fees on stand-alone flights. The Moon Palace estimate pairs a hotel quote and a flight quote from different sites, so its price can move independently. If a Transat or Air Canada Vacations package for Moon Palace appears at a lower price, it will likely beat the do-it-yourself figure, as Transat did for Iberostar and Palladium.

**Where the money goes.** The flight-and-hotel base is 74–89% of every total. Excursions are the part you control: dropping Mystic Mountain at Moon Palace saves CA$677, and replacing the Kingston day with Nine Mile (CA$121 for entry plus a shorter driver day) likely saves a few hundred dollars (my estimate).

## Final recommendation

**Recommended: Iberostar Selection Rose Hall Suites, Saturday Dec 12 to Friday Dec 18 on Air Transat, CA$7,877 for the three of you (about CA$9,550 all-in with transfers, four excursions and spending money).** It is the best balance of reviews, airport proximity, a proper water park and a kids club that fits your child. Each extra night costs about CA$800 (Dec 12–19 is CA$8,677) and the Dec 19 return leaves at 7:25 PM, so choose it only if you want a full eighth day.

**How to choose between them.** If the cliff-jumping café is a must, stay west: Palladium or Beaches put Rick's Café within about 10–45 minutes (my estimate), and Iberostar can reach it on a tour. If a guaranteed, supervised cliff jump plus waterfalls and a Bob Marley day matter more, stay at Moon Palace and treat Rick's as a skip. Iberostar sits in the middle: easiest arrival, good rafting and history nearby, and one long private day to Ocho Rios waterfalls.

**Date logic.** Saturday Dec 12 is the only Saturday departure in the window and the Transat packages are priced best for it. Sunday Dec 13 (Air Canada) lands at 1:25 PM, which suits Ocho Rios. A Wednesday Dec 16 departure only fits a 3-night stay inside your window. Nights from Dec 18 onward cost noticeably more (Moon Palace rose from CA$633 to CA$780 per night).

- [ ] Call Rick's Café (+1 876-822-1764) to ask whether an 11-year-old may jump and from which platform.
- [ ] Ask Iberostar for Star Camp hours and whether construction noise affects your room block.
- [ ] Re-check Mayfield Falls, YS Falls and any attraction you depend on in late November; their post-hurricane status could not be verified.
- [ ] Confirm baggage terms if you build flights and hotel separately (Moon Palace or Royalton).
- [ ] Re-check hotel open/closed status in November (Royalton Blue Waters and Royalton Negril only reopened in Aug–Sept 2026).
- [ ] Buy travel insurance that covers hurricane-season changes; the Canadian advisory notes the season runs to late November.
